Doris Included in Irish Selection But McCarthy Left Out
Newly reappointed manager Andy Farrell has included captain Doris in his Ireland roster for the fall matches, but lock McCarthy misses out.
The captain, absent from play since having shoulder surgery in early May, has come back to Leinster training, with doubts lingering whether he will be ready to play against the All Blacks in Chicago on November 1.
Lock McCarthy, on the other hand, was not considered after not recovering from the foot issue suffered during the first Lions match against Australia in the summer.
Ulster forward Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster winger Calvin Nash are also absent due to fitness concerns, while full-back Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after having a hip operation following the Lions tour.
Dublin province prop McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole new member in the 34-man squad, however Irish rugby authorities says uncapped Munster pair Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and once-capped Connacht winger Shayne Bolton will head to Chicago as "reserves".
After facing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their 2016 encounter, Ireland will play Japan, Australia and world title holders South Africa in Dublin.
"It's an exciting group to the squad and it's a chance for the more experienced members and for the newcomers on the recent tour to the Lelos and Portugal," said the coach, back to Ireland duty after taking a sabbatical to lead the Lions tour to the southern hemisphere.
In a largely experienced squad, the Dublin club's Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will once again compete for the starting number 10 spot. The fly-half role is still up for grabs, as Prendergast and Crowley set to play against each other for the first time in Saturday's URC match at the Dublin venue.
Frawley is the additional number 10 selected as the coach deciding not to selecting the province's Byrne.
At number 9, Farrell has picked British and Irish Lion Gibson-Park and Casey, who led the national side to the summer Test wins over Georgia and Portugal. There is also a return for Connacht's Caolin Blade, chosen to teammate Murphy.
Henshaw, Bundee Aki, Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey represent an experienced cohort of centre choices. Jamie Osborne is a further choice in the midfield, but the 23-year-old is also a leading candidate to deputise for Keenan at number 15.
Outside backs Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. O'Brien shone on his national team debut over the summer with a brace each in the wins over Georgia and Portugal.
Paddy McCarthy is the only new addition in the Irish pack. The loose-head prop has started two of Leinster's URC United Rugby Championship matches so far and featured in the second string's defeat by the English in Bristol previously.
McCarthy was selected in interim boss Paul O'Connell's summer selection, but did not receive a international appearance.
Munster second row Ahern, who earned his first two caps in those Tests, is kept in the squad, and experienced Northern province lock Iain Henderson returns after sitting out the summer matches.
Conan, who played in all three Lions matches over the summer, is set to cover for the captain should the captain does not regain full fitness in time to face the All Blacks.
The national team will meet in Dublin on Monday before flying to the US on the following day.
