Female Victim Knifed in Birmingham Bus Stop Assault Succumbs to Injuries
A woman who was stabbed to her neck area in an unprovoked attack at a bus stop within Birmingham has died, police have confirmed.
The deceased woman, aged 34 years, came under attack in Smallbrook Queensway, right beside the Bullring shopping centre, just prior to 9 PM GMT on Friday, according to police statements.
The suspect, 21, was presented at Birmingham court Monday morning, charged over the attack.
He was previously accused with attempted murder but following the victim's passing the charge has been updated to include murder.
Police Response
The force said police personnel will remain in the downtown area through Monday providing public assurance, and investigators were supporting the woman's family.
Detectives are appealing for witnesses who may have seen the accused, identified as British citizen of Black ethnicity, and is believed to have been wearing an all-grey tracksuit, black hat, trainers with a backpack.
Incident Location
The stabbing happened near the Bullring shopping centre, opposite the main entrance of New Street railway station.
Police said they were treating it as a random violent act and Det Insp James Nix said they were working to understand why it happened.
Witness Accounts
An area worker, who works nearby, recounted paramedic and police activity after completing her shift around 10 PM on Friday.
She described the scene as "quite chaotic", adding that some of her colleagues heard a commotion around 9 PM.
"Many my colleagues use transit services, take the tram... our security is compromised essentially, here in the city centre."
Another individual, twenty-five, resident of Stoke, said he came the city fairly regularly to see his girlfriend resident there, and was concerned regarding the incident.
"It causes concern for my girlfriend," he stated.
"She lacks transportation employed at all of the big music venues... considering something completely unprovoked [happened], understandably, it's horrible."
