A loud chorus of blaring horns and dockworkers chanting “we don’t want you” greeted an Israel-linked container ship when it arrived in the Tuscan port city this week.

For two days, the protesting port laborers refused to back down, refusing to handle the ship’s cargo in a act of defiant solidarity for Palestinians and the international aid convoy attempting to bring humanitarian assistance to Gaza. The protest was successful and the vessel, headed to the US and Canada, left the port.

Nationwide Port Protests Expand

From Genoa, Trieste and Ravenna in the northern region, to Salerno and Taranto in the south, in recent weeks port workers across Italy have succeeded in obstructing ships suspected to be carrying weapons for the Israeli military, as resistance to the conflict in Gaza grows stronger.

The dockers’ determination to block weapons and stifle trade has been a key element of the pro-Palestinian uprising in the nation as demands increases on Giorgia Meloni’s far-right government to adopt a firmer position against the Israeli government.

“Israel is carrying out an systematic destruction of civilians in Gaza – by killing them, by starving them,” stated a port employee, one protester. “We cannot remain indifferent. We have historically been a port of welcome, not one of conflict. We will keep demonstrating until this hostilities ends.”

General Strike Adds Pressure

“The current administration can only remain in power with scapegoats,” stated Gianfranco Francese, who heads the Livorno unit of Cgil. “There is also a significant inconsistency between what Meloni says and what she implements,” he continued. “She speaks of being a devoted nationalist, a religious person and a mother, but she has not taken any political or diplomatic action to stop the massacre of women and children.”

Government Standing Amid Protests

But despite the widespread popular feeling shown through the wave of solidarity demonstrations, the ruling party continues to lead in polls, at around 30%, and she has headed an uncharacteristically stable Italian government since taking office in October 2022.

“On one hand, there is the majority of the population in solidarity with Palestinians which desires an cessation to the conflict,” said a political analyst, a founder of YouTrend. “But you don’t see the effects of this when it time to cast ballots.”

The analyst referred to recent regional votes in the central area where the governing alliance secured a another term. The same outcome is expected in elections in other regions.

“Last night, there was an initiative held in medical facilities during which we honored the thousands of medics who died in Gaza while trying to help people,” she stated. “It was a deeply emotional occasion and we will continue to mobilise. You might not see it in political polls yet, but I believe this government is becoming deeply concerned of us.”
