White House Freezes $2.1 Billion for Chicago Infrastructure Initiatives
The national freeze on billions allocated for Chicago's transit initiatives was revealed on the end of the week, as stated by Budget Director Russ Vought.
Targeted Plans
Included in the plans targeted by the funding freeze include the extension of the Red Line, which was scheduled to begin construction in 2026 and improve mass transit to underprivileged areas in the city.
Additionally, upgrading projects on a number of transit lines were also frozen.
Justification for the Pause
The official stated on social media that the money was “put on hold to ensure funding is not flowing via race-based contracting.”
The announcement comes after a similar action recently involving NYC, where the director stated that $18 million for transportation would be frozen, including funding for a proposed subway tunnel under the Hudson River.
Federal Stoppage Situation
This decision occurs as the national stoppage reaches its 72nd hour, with the upper chamber planned to take a vote later in the day.
Regardless of the scheduled Senate vote, there is little optimism that a agreement is close, as Democrats hold out for a series of health-focused compromises.
Additional Consequences
Meanwhile, a growing number of government departments and staff are directly faulting opposition leaders for the closure.
The government communication by offices may be a violation of the government ethics law, which prohibits federal employees from conducting partisan political activity.
Furloughed public servants at various offices have been directed to set automated replies stating that they are not working because Democrats triggered a closure.
A radical left has chosen to shut down the United States government in the name of reckless spending and obstructionism,” the treasury department’s website declares.
Additionally, warnings over financial harm seem not to be stimulating negotiation attempts.
An analysis by an economic analyst indicated that every seven-day period the shutdown lasts will mean a $7 billion impact to the economy.
