Toto Wolff is engaged in advanced talks to sell part of his shareholding in the Mercedes F1 outfit.

The deal values Mercedes at £4.6 billion – an unprecedented figure for a Formula 1 squad – following the McLaren team were valued at £3.5 billion in a change of ownership structure in September.

Wolff, who owns one-third of Mercedes F1, would sell a shareholding approximately 5%.

The 53-year-old would stay on as team principal and chief executive officer if the sale goes through.

Ownership Breakdown

Remaining partners in Mercedes F1 are Mercedes and industrial group Ineos, who each also own a third of the enterprise.

A Mercedes spokesperson said: "We will be making no official statement on the matter. The governance of Mercedes F1 stays unaltered, and all three partners are fully committed to continued achievements of Mercedes-Benz in F1."

Valuation Growth

The deal signifies a substantial rise in worth of Mercedes F1 since Ineos Group bought its stake for £208m in 2022.

The rise demonstrates the expansion in valuations of F1 teams in the past few years as a consequence of the growing popularity of the sport globally.

This was also seen in the box-office performance of the Formula 1 film featuring Brad Pitt, which debuted last summer and earned over $630 million (£458 million) at cinemas worldwide.

The film represents the actor's top-grossing film and the highest-earning sports film ever released.

Present Standings

Mercedes are second in the constructors' championship, behind McLaren Racing, with three Grands Prix remaining this season.

Mercedes' primary racer George Russell has secured victory in two of the 21 grands prix this year and is in fourth place in the drivers' championship behind McLaren's Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, and Red Bull's Max Verstappen.

The team won a record eight straight constructors' championships and seven drivers' titles, six for Lewis Hamilton and one by Nico Rosberg, from 2014 and 2021.
